Let’s Green CA! is part of the Romero Institute, a Santa Cruz-based nonprofit law and policy center with a 50-year legacy of winning justice for the people. We’re seeking an experienced Development Director who will design and implement successful fundraising strategies to help make California a leader in the movement to boldly and equitably address the global climate emergency.

In collaboration with leaders like Dolores Huerta and the Dolores Huerta Foundation, Let’s Green CA! is building grassroots support for an equitable clean energy transition that puts jobs, workers and frontline communities first. Our Electrify CA! Campaign—one piece of which is currently moving through the California State Legislature— aims to implement change from the ground up to create a healthy, sustainable, carbon-free California. The Development Director will work with our leadership team to aggressively develop fundraising campaigns and pursue grant opportunities to power our work forward.

Location: California

Compensation: $90,000 - $110,000, commensurate with experience. This position is full-time with benefits including healthcare, employer matched 401(k), and a generous time off package.

Preferred Start Date: Applications are reviewed as they come in, but the position is open until we find the perfect fit for our team.


You will create and execute an annual development strategy to increase support from individual donors, partners, and foundations, and you’ll identify new opportunities for growth. You will plan and execute major fundraising events and communication efforts, working closely with our Let’s Green CA! Program Director, Romero Institute Executive Director, Development Associate, as well as our digital organizing, communications, and video teams.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Provide strategic, visionary leadership to create a development plan to grow our fundraising to $1M annually;
  • Manage solicitation and stewardship of donors and grantmakers, including securing, preparing for, and proactively following up on cultivation meetings, proposals, and reports;
  • Develop and nurture relationships with existing and potential major and mid-level donors;
  • Develop and execute strategies to nurture and grow the base of individual donors, including expansion of our planned giving program and ideating creative ways for major donors to contribute and participate;
  • Research and lead the application process for public and private grants;
  • Execute a communications strategy that builds our brand and supports fundraising efforts, largely through email newsletters, social media, website, and partnerships;
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with our board of directors, our staff, and our partner organizations;
  • Work closely with the Development Associate to build and improve systems for organizing and utilizing all information about past, current, and prospective donors via EveryAction dashboards and reports.


  • Education: Bachelor’s degree. Masters preferred.
  • A passion to promote the Let’s Green CA! mission to address the climate crisis and champion environmental justice;
  • Five-plus years experience in a senior level development role, ideally as development director;
  • Proven track record of successfully planning and executing development strategies that secure support from individual donors and foundations to achieve revenue targets;
  • Proven management and leadership abilities and experience working with senior-level executives, preferably in a nonprofit environment, to develop and execute plans and campaigns;
  • Ability to see the big picture and think strategically while also being able to execute tactical tasks;
  • High energy and relentless positivity; team-oriented, motivated, flexible, and attentive to detail;
  • A strong communicator with superb writing abilities, with emphasis on clear and compelling appeals, emails, proposals, annual reports, and grants;
  • Highly organized, capable of balancing and prioritizing concurrent projects and deadlines;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Solid computer chops and knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Google suite, CRM and database programs (EveryAction experience preferred but not required), and development software;
  • A natural team player who enjoys supporting and collaborating with colleagues.
