Development Director

The Romero Institute — a nonprofit law and policy center at the forefront of social and environmental justice movements — seeks an experienced Development Director who will develop and implement successful fundraising strategies to help us support human rights and influence environmental policy.

We accomplish our mission to safeguard people and the planet through two primary channels. Our flagship, the Lakota People’s Law Project (LPLP), focuses on Native American advocacy and voting rights and has an active, global online supporter base. The Romero Institute is committed to maintaining a safe and secure work environment during the pandemic. Compensation will range from $85,000 to $120,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. The Romero Institute provides healthcare and a generous time off package.

Responsibilities:

Our Development Director will work in partnership with our Executive Director to increase and mobilize resources to empower Indigenous communities and local, regional, and statewide climate action in California. You’ll believe in activism, and you’ll love to gain and share knowledge of environmentalism, civil and constitutional rights, and Indigenous sovereignty issues. You will create and execute an annual development strategy to increase support from individual donors, partners, and foundations, and you’ll identify new opportunities for growth. You will liaise with the rest of our senior staff to plan and execute major fundraising events and communication efforts directed toward supporters. In addition, the Development Director will supervise our Development Associate, and you’ll work closely with our well-developed digital organizing and communications and video teams.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Provide, in partnership with our Executive Director, strategic, visionary leadership to create a development plan to grow our annual fundraising goal from $2-3M to $5M-plus;
  • Oversee solicitation and stewardship of donors and grantmakers, including securing, preparing for, and proactively following up on cultivation meetings, proposals, and reports;
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to develop and execute strategies to nurture and grow the base of individual donors, including expansion of our planned giving program and ideating creative ways for major donors to contribute and participate;
  • Research and lead the application process for public and private grants;
  • Work with the Executive Director and our communications staff to execute a communications strategy that builds our brands and supports fundraising efforts, largely through email newsletters, social media, website, and partnerships;
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with the Romero Institute’s key organizational stakeholders, our board of directors, our staff, and our partner organizations;
  • Work closely with the Development Associate to build and improve systems for organizing and utilizing all information about past, current, and prospective donors via EveryAction dashboards and reports.
  • Work with the Executive Director and our President to develop a plan to generate an endowment that would provide an increased level of stability and security to the ongoing work.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree. Masters preferred.
  • A passion to promote the Romero Institute’s mission to address the climate crisis and issues faced by Indigenous communities;
  • Five-plus years experience in a senior level development role, ideally as development director;
  • Proven track record of successfully planning and executing development strategies that secure support from individual donors and foundations to achieve revenue targets;
  • Proven management and leadership abilities and experience working with senior-level executives, preferably in a nonprofit environment, to develop and execute plans and campaigns;
  • Ability to see the big picture and think strategically while also being able to execute tactical tasks;
  • High energy and relentless positivity; team-oriented, motivated, flexible, and attentive to detail;
  • A strong communicator with superb writing abilities, with emphasis on clear and compelling appeals, emails, proposals, annual reports, and grants;
  • Highly organized, capable of balancing and prioritizing concurrent projects and deadlines;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Solid computer chops and knowledge of Microsoft office suite, Google suite, CRM and database programs (EveryAction experience preferred but not required), and development software;
  • A natural team player who enjoys supporting and collaborating with colleagues.
